First thing, mom wanted water. Which was beside her bed. And she was in a chair. Three feet away. And was mostly asleep. Just thirsty. Instead of listening to her bleat (yes, I sometimes think of her as bleating) for hours and hours, I decided to get up, put on some clothes (TMI?) and hand her her water cup. Then, back to sleep (since it was 7 am and I need my beauty rest. I need a lot of beauty rest!!). Until 8 when mom complained she didn't have any water, which was on her tray, out of sight (not really) behind a box of tissues and a roll of toilet paper. Up, dressed and water pointed out, I was going to go back to sleep but decided to check my computer and do a smidgen of work. I forgot to post the Smith Mail Blast yesterday. Sigh. Life is that way sometimes. I also launched Facebook to reply to the 15 or so people who had taken the time to wish me a happy birthday. (Thank you everyone.) And to receive a diatribe from a woman I don't know who friended me for some reason. Maybe so she could write diatribes to me. Who knows? Anyway, I wrote "money isn't real" and she told me it most assuredly was. I feel edified. (Ok, not really - glad she womansplained it to me.)
What is next on my agenda for the day of the anniversary of my birth? No idea - maybe play on my phone a bit. We shall see. I do have a massage scheduled for later this afternoon. And we are definitely pigging out on pizza and wings tonight for dinner for me. What I am feeling mom is still unclear at this point, but I will figure that out at Cams when I am there.
Oh, watched Interstellar last night and enjoyed it. I don't care about the science (which I thought was ok). I just like Mathew Mc(however you spell his last name)y who did (as my friend Jeff might say) chew the scenery just a tad. Just fun stuff. Yay Science Fiction. :)
Rain it a raineth. Good thing my parade wears rain clothing. And carries an umbrella. It could be snow, so...
Getting dragged into Smith things. Sigh.
At least the next Harry Potter book is waiting for me at the Library. I was getting towards the end of this, the third and was worried. A little. Not a lot. Really.
Time to catch up on my day a little. Where was I? Oh, yes, dragged into Smith stuff. A few times today. No day off for me. Grrr and sigh.
After lunch, I went to my massage. (Thank you Rosanne!) Pleasant but not great. I will keep searching for the masterful (mistressful?) masseuse next time. It was raining pretty heavily as I got into my car, so I decided to postpone any Birthday shopping until another time - maybe next week sometime. And I didn't get myself a cake (which is a good thing as I will explicate a little further along). I just headed home, played for a few minutes (I restarted playing Tomb Raider as I had forgotten how much of it worked), then put Karl on the phone for mom. She barely reached her hand out at all, one of her more infuriating behaviors. At around 5:15 I headed downtown to get pizza and stuff for dinner. Yay Cam's! A quick beer at Lake Drum while waiting for the food to be prepared. Back home, ate too much food (mom ate a lot too, yay) and now it is time for a shower. Huzzuh!
All in all a very pleasant day. Showered, clean sheets, mom is in bed and I am headed there too. Soon.

Toilet Paper Butts
My mom has cut down on her paper product usage quite a bit. Yay. Still prodigious are the amounts she goes through, but lesser so. Huzzuh! When she goes through toilet paper, she often gets down to the end of a roll and then ignores the poor thing. So I have taken to snagging what I have termed toilet paper butts and using them in my little bathroom (because it is smaller than the big bathroom)(and it is fairly small - not teeny apartment in New York Small, but not expansive by most definitions of the word). Go me.
I had a weird dream (are they any not weird dreams?) about losing my shoes on a train to Berlin. So I asked for help from a police person. I was speaking mostly German with a little bit of English thrown in here and there. Then, just as we were about to start actively looking for my shoes, the conductor walked in with them and gave them to me. And said something in English about not expecting a lot from people with terminal cancer. I thanked everyone profusely, but in Mandarin until I realized that they all had no idea what I was saying, so switched back to German. Then it was off to explore Berlin with a digital SLR. Fun stuff. Time to go back to sleep for a little bit.
So, tomorrow is the anniversary of my birth. Yippee? I have no plans. And no one to do anything with. Boo hoo. Actually, I am ok with doing this for and with and by myself (for the most part - I know that even islands are part of a greater whole). Unfortunately, I didn't do anything about getting someone in for respite. I just can't get my mind around it yet somehow. I will, though. I have 60 hours to use in a couple of months. Eeeek! Anyway, I was planning on getting a massage - but have not done anything about that yet. Other than that, no exciting plans. Pizza and wings for dinner, probably. And maybe an artichoke.
Part of the reason for my lack of motivation to do anything is because I am going to have to run the show the rest of the week, as my "staff" all were too busy to work. I really need to find a good deputy. Someone who could even take over for me if I were to change jobs. Finding someone I trust enough to do that hasn't proven easy.
Aha! I have booked a massage with an unknown (to me - I am sure someone knows her somewhere...) masseuse for tomorrow afternoon. Pizza and wings for dinner for sure. And that is the extent of my birthday plans. Oh, and to try and not do one single solitary thing for the Smith. That would be novel.
Great - beer made me sick again. Sigh. I had some Sierra Nevada and suddenly had the urge to perform reverse peristalsis. Crap. Good thing I enjoy throwing up now and again. Sad that it is the day before my birthday. We will see if leftovers and some other beer has the same effect. I hope not...

Quite a Day
Most of the day was spent on Smith stuff - lots and lots of Smith stuff - meetings, meetings everywhere. When I wasn't meeting at the Smith I was working at home on Smith stuff. Yay?
Right now, I am working on trying to figure out who has the domestic theatrical rights to Arsenic and Old Lace. My contact at Warner Bros. was not very helpful. She told me that they have the rights to Arsenic and Old Lace for Canada and that's it. I asked who has the rights domestically and have not received an answer. I have tried a variety of other sources and so far, no go. I wish there was someplace one could go to find out who has what rights to which movie - a nice big database somewhere that was searchable - then when you found who had the rights, their contact information - phone number, email and snail mail address - would be right there. Wouldn't that be nice? So, I have some more phone numbers to try tomorrow. I wish I knew someone who knew the answer to these questions. Sigh city.
So, that was a large part of my day. Oh, and meetings. I had three meetings yesterday, one of which was about Arsenic and Old Lace. One was the monthly Film Committee meeting. And one was the Programming Committee Meeting. Gotta love good meetings.
In between, I kept coming back to the house. Mom actually asked to have a shower! That is weird. But good. Though she has been complaining all day that her aide washed her with especially drying soap. Sigh. I am thinking of trying a new lunch - maybe grilled cheese sandwiches with soup. Though she is eating the lunches she has currently well enough. For some reason, I get the impression that mom doesn't like grilled cheese. Does anyone know?
Dinner was from Cams. I have been jonesing for pizza for a long time. Ever since mom announced that she didn't like pizza (who the hello (sic) doesn't like pizza?) I haven't served it to her. I have eaten a little here and there, but it is infrequent. Last night, I ordered stuffed shells with meatballs (which mom ate decently) onion rings (cams onion rings are great!)(who knew?) and two slices of pizza. I ate too much and was basically immobilized for the rest of the evening. I sat in the living room and worked on the puzzle while I put things on for mom. Through two movies! One was Pat and Mike with Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn. Um, no. Not a movie I am going to look forward to watching again any time soon (or in this lifetime). Not terrible, but not worth my time. The second movie was the 1,263rd playing (in this house) of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in Follow the Fleet.
Here is a picture of the change in the alcove so far:

Seen Milk?
The other night, mom and I watched Milk - not a movie that I was dying to see, but someone mentioned so it ended up on the NetFlix list. I was alive during those occurrences, but was not really aware of what was going on - especially since I was on the East Coast and San Francisco is on the West Coast (for those of you who weren't sure...). I was aware of the gay rights issues and didn't understand what the big hullabaloo was about. People are people, don't hate, don't discriminate. That seems pretty simple to me. Anyway, the movie was surprisingly good. Sean Penn did an excellent job. As did the rest of the cast. I was saddened by the fear evinced by so many. But happy that good apparently triumphed! Huzzah!
I have started watching episodes of Bones on Netflix. They have through season 6 available for streaming. I still don't understand how they choose which items to stream and which to not stream. I am sure it is some sort of legal rights/distribution thing. Sigh. Anyway, for a longish time, back in Clayton, we would watch an episode of Bones with dinner. I just had to remember not to actually be eating during the first few minutes when they revealed the body (always quite gross on Bones).
Last night I visited the Red Dove Tavern in Geneva. They always have good beers on tap. Yay! I had a a Firestone Walker Union Jack IPA (though it tasted a bit more like a double IPA to me) a Naked Dove Scotch Ale and a third beer that escapes me just now. All three were quite tasty. I also had nice chats with Erin (who is planning big changes in the not so distant future), David (who is working towards a degree at NY Chiropractic College) and Abby who is always entertaining.
And I started reading Norman Rush's book of short stories - Whites. I liked the first story though not as much as I hoped I would. I will try to read some more and see if his style grows on me. It felt sort of disjointed to me.
Still percolating (or plugging, hmm) along on the computer stuff. Every once in a while I get the thought that this is totally doable, and then the next few days I feel like I am way over my head. We shall see which wins out!
Oh, I made an awesome pizza last night for dinner. When I made the pizza dough a while ago, I froze some cause it wouldn't fit on the pizza stone. It was pretty little when I got it out - but I stretched it to fit most of the stone. Which made the crust pretty thin, which I like! Next, I converted some spaghetti sauce into pizza sauce (added a lot of garlic salt and oregano). Toppings were grilled onions, grilled mushrooms and pepperoni. Mozzarella cheese for the cheese. Mom actually liked it (besides just saying that she liked it). I will have to do that again soon, as I have a lot of sauce to use up!

What's it like?
I often wonder what it is like inside my mom's head. Maybe I will find out for myself one day, but for now, I am still baffled. Frequently. I mean, she forgets from one minute to the next what TV show she is watching. Sometimes. Other times, she will be watching a show and remember what happened two weeks ago on it. She remembers having dinner with a couple of my friends in Raleigh, but can't remember my sister's downstairs bathroom's walk-in shower. Weird and scary.
Mom and I went and did laundry yesterday. She was not a lot of help but I am glad that she was at least interested in getting out and about. Yippee! We had three loads because I have been neglecting the laundry a bit. We really need a cleaning person to come in and help. Ginger is nice and all, but a cleaning person she is not. The fact that she helps mom with a shower every other week is awesome! But I need someone to come in and make sure that I am not helping us both to live in squalor. My idea of cleaning is to sweep the kitchen floor at least once a month...and that is not on a regular, clockwork sort of schedule...
We also went food shopping together - first time for that in a long while. There weren't too many things that mom wanted to but that we didn't need, which is great. Against my better judgement we bought a box of clementines. I hope they don't go bad before they are eaten. Dinner last night was home made chicken wings and home made pizza. Well, the pizza dough was from a packet. Maybe I will learn to make my own pizza dough, one day. I tried cooking it on a pizza stone. The directions suggested to use cornmeal between the dough and the stone. When I went to get the cornmeal from the jar labeled "cornmeal" I smelled it first and just couldn't bring myself to use it. So, I put nothing between the dough and the stone. Oops. The pizza tasted good, but the bottom crust was all stuck to the stone. Better luck next time!
Oh, and if anyone is interested, I thought the woman who won Jeopardy last night was very attractive. Ooh, maybe she reads my blog and will contact me and we will meet and hit it off and...it could happen. Not very likely, but it could! :)

Pizza!
My search continued last night for my favorite pizza in Geneva. And so far, the winner is Cam's Pizza in downtown. Cam's has been around for years and years. I don't know if it is the same owner, or if it has changed owners 1000 times. Anyway, I think it might be the last contender - though I haven't tried the local Dominoes. Hmm. I went down there, to Cam's, in the rain and ordered a pizza in the shop. They said 20 minutes, though it was closer to half an hour. The 14" pizza was larger than the box and although I ordered pepperoni and artichoke hearts, I didn't really see much evidence of the artichoke hearts. I know, they are expensive, but still, one actual heart chunk wouldn't have been too much to ask, would it? Still, it was pretty tasty and might just be the winner for the time being.
One of my DC (Daily Challenge) friends thought that the woman I met in the grocery store would actually contact me. I applaud her positivity - but I doubt her grasp on this particular reality. I think the chances are slight that I will hear from her. I will give it a week before I write the supermarket woman off completely, but me, I would have already contacted me. Yes, I am that wonderful. No, seriously. I mean if someone gives me their contact information, I am at least polite enough to send them a note.
What else exciting happened yesterday. Spanish class and Spanish lab - I think I went back to my failing ways on the quiz last night - it was stuff we studied almost two weeks ago and I wasn't really prepared - the info wasn't fresh in my little noggin'. I now know one thing I will have to study up on for Friday's exam. I have the "repaso" to do today. And that is about it for commitments, I believe. But back to yesterday. Nope, nothing exciting to report.
Ok, time to do my repaso. Sigh.

Sunless Saturday
And all is swell with the world. Ok, maybe swell is a tad too strong a word. Mom is totally gaga this morning which is sad. Hopefully she will get better as the day progresses. We will see.
We went to a new-to-us pizza place last night for dinner. That was our day's excitement. Oh, and errands. First we mailed two stuffed animals to some of her grand children (she has 9 so far - none of them from me). Next, Mom wanted to see if she could get some dizzy relief pills. Turns out that the medication she was prescribed three years ago has subsequently become available over the counter. So we got her some of that. And she got a flu-shot. I haven't had a flu shot in 20 years, I don't think. And I don't think I have had the flu in that time either. Who knows? I can barely remember yesterday, which is one reason that I blog. Maybe the act of writing about things will help them to stick in my brain for a bit longer. Anything is possible. Anyway, after the flu shot, we went to Wal-Mart to get mom some toothpaste that she had seen advertised on TV. Tooth whitening Optima from Colgate - or some such nonsense. Sigh.
So, that was our exciting day. No word from CreateSpace about Diary of a Plate Addict, yet. I hope they get back to us sooner than the 48 hours, but I think that is unlikely. It will be 24 hours around 4 this afternoon. And it is Saturday. Do they work all seven days? Hmm.
The pizza, by the way, was not great. Still haven't found a great pizza place here in Geneva. The search continues - next time, Cam's downtown.
Hope you all are having a great life!

Fear is the Mindkiller
So, my brain is a little dead now and again. I am afraid, off and on (I try not to dwell on fear causing thoughts) about a lot of things. All in the future - so they aren't really worth being afraid of. That being said, I just thought I would share.
I guess what I am most fearful of is what happens when mom can't be left alone by herself in the house. And what to do about that eventual eventuality. I hope it isn't for a long time yet, but apparently I need to be prepared for it. I worry about money, since I have so little coming in. And expenses just keep increasing. Sigh. And of course there are other things - like ending up in a similar way to my mom - I wonder what it feels like to lose one's ability to remember. And to be alone - without a significant other. I know we are all alone really, but still, it would be nice to share that aloneness with someone. :) I think couples live longer, don't they?
Gee, that was pleasant.
Ok, moving on. Yesterday was another day. And tomorrow will be too.
Yesterday, all my troubles...anyway - we successfully navigated all of our errands. Huzzah! Mom had her 10 minutes with Dr. Ryan and was not, as usual, thrilled with his attentiveness or lack thereof. I didn't go in with her since I do not have a health power of attorney yet. Next time - in four months, I will. Nothing too drastic was reported to me by mom - for what that is worth. Next was the library, where we once again were surprised to learn that mom has misplaced a couple of library books. One has subsequently been found! Yippee! Post office, nothing too exciting there. And we stopped in to see Morgan, the bartender. She had not practiced juggling! Although the visit was pleasant, I left feeling vaguely dissatisfied with the experience. I think mom had a good time, sipping her soda water and chatting with people. We met the sons of the Registrar from Hobart.
We had Mark's Pizzeria Pizza for dinner last night. Not scintillating. Glad to have experienced it but probably won't go that road again for a few years. Then the opera meeting. Suzanne needs someone to help her, so that is what I will do. I have offered to help in any way that she needs. We aren't communicating about the opera again until early July, so it is still mostly unclear to me what she expects, but I am ok with that. I will get my makeup book from Clayton, but other than that, no clue. Oh well. It will just be good to be participating in a production again!
Tomorrow, mom and I head to NC. I am not really looking forward to the trip - the drive especially. Posting may be lumpy, so please bear with me!
Pictures from June 22, 2011:

One of the myriad reasons I like my iPhone is for the ability to take stealthy pictures - like this one - I am not practiced at it enough to try it on people but maybe one day...

This was puffy pizza - not my favorite - but yummy enough.

Love, love, love this tree! I took four or five pictures of it yesterday!

There is just something amusing about this tree to me. And a little sad and droopy...

Day one Trip to Geneva
Travel day! I do so enjoy traveling. Even when it doesn't go as smoothly as one could hope. All in all, it wasn't a bad travel day. I did have to get up pretty early for me. Cate and Daniel do it all week long - getting up around 5 or so. Eeek! We all got up and got ready and got out on time - we chose 6:15 as the leaving time so that Cate could get to work on time. I hope she did! I zipped through the security check with narry a difficulty. Oh, I think I did lose a pen. 1 down, 250 to go (I have way too many pens). I found the gate and sat down to wait. By waiting, I mean napping. Napped and napped. And then got on the plane. Teeny! I couldn't even stand up straight in the aisle. But it was a jet, instead of a turboprop. Found my aisle seat - I like the aisle for the view of the plane that they afford. Got my elephant pillow and my sound canceling headphones out and was getting comfortable when a couple got on the plane. Their seats were separated, so I agreed to swap. Still an aisle seat. And proceeded to nap. I hope I didn't drool on the doctor flying to Burlington in the seat beside me. Anyway, I napped and napped and kept looking out the window to see that we weren't moving. Apparently we didn't move for an hour! No window of opportunity to land at Reagan National in Washington. Oh well. More napping.
The flight was uneventful. I got a glass of water and napped some more. When we were getting close to landing, the steward starting asking about people's connections. Turns out that most of us were going to miss ours, since we were an hour late. at least 6 of us were going on to Syracuse. I bonded with a woman and her two lovely college daughters. Their answer to the question of what they were studying sounded practiced: Daughter one (Meredith College) Psychology, Daughter two (Elon College) Psychology, Mother "Just plain Psycho!" She was great, though. When it came time to get our boarding passes to the next flight, she convinced the agent to give us all a free lunch! Woohoo!
So, I sat in the airport for more than two hours. Napping. Ok, not all napping. I did some people watching. I love people watching. Did some writing - started maybe four blog entries that may or may not make it here. Helped out a man from Jamaica by lending him my phone. We commiserated about the state of the nation and talked about all sorts of things. Including Marijuana. Ate my lunch - from 5 guys - still not thrilled with their food - really don't like their french fries at all. The ten dollar voucher was almost entirely used up on that meal! Eeek! I also texted with a friend for a while which helped to make the time more pleasant.
Finally got on another teeny plane and flew to Syracuse. Yippee! Lovely, overcast Syracuse. I used Enterprise for my rental car company. My mom's Discover card was declined and I ended up having a nice chat with the security people. Turns out that there is something wrong with the card's data strip. Not going to worry about it. The car I got (a picture has been posted to Facebook) is some sort of Chevy. Reminds me of a PT cruiser but larger. The drive was pleasant enough, despite blowing snow for the first 20 minutes.
Got to Geneva safely, which is always a good thing. Mom and I decided that the first night I would not cook, so we got Pizza hut pizza - I like their pan pizza - and a few chicken wings. Then off to the movies to see Voyage of the Dawn Treader. I think I read those books 41 years ago. Weird! Fun movie, though. I wonder if they are making a version of The Last Battle... Then home to bed for me. Long day! Today - shopping!
